What is specialty coffee?
Specialty coffee is made from Arabica beans, which are known for their complex flavors. These beans are grown at high altitudes, often in specific regions known for ideal growing conditions (like certain areas in Colombia, Ethiopia, or Kenya).
Specialty coffee is graded by professional coffee tasters (called Q Graders) who score it on a scale of 0-100. To be considered specialty, the coffee must score 80 points or higher. These scores assess the bean's flavor profile, aroma, acidity, body, and aftertaste.
The beans are processed with attention to detail, which could involve methods like washed, natural, or honey processing. Each method affects the final taste of the coffee.
